Welcome to Zo Suan Lun where we blog and post updates on Burma and the Zomi’s strive towards a genuine federal democracy at the turn of authoritarian military coup in February of 2021. Etymologically, “Zo” from the site’s name is derived from our ethnic group “Zomi” while “Suan” and “Lun”are our last names, giving us the site, Zo Suan Lun.
We are a family with a strong conviction for democracy, justice and human rights. Since the era of dictator General Newin and later, the 1988 uprising, my family have actively supported the democratic movement in Burma.Burma, despite its flaws, went through a period where it was run by elected members of the parliament and a period that was open, transparent and inclusive. But it only lasted two election cycles, and was disrupted, rather destroyed when General Min Aung Hliang and army led a brutal coup in February of 2021. The coup dashed all the dreams of making Burma an inclusive, democratic, prosperous nation free from authoritarianism.
As the younger generation crowded the streets of small towns to major cities of Burma voicing their dissent, we supported the Civil Disobedience Movement, participated in peaceful protests and online movements to raise awareness regarding what is happening in Burma/Myanmar and highlighting the work of Zomi people in the strive towards a democratic Burma against dictatorial regime. Thank you for visiting our site; we hope to keep you updated about what is happening in Burma as it steps towards democray.
